This Health Technician position is in the Surgical Service Clinics in the VA Loma Linda Healthcare System. This position will report to the Supervisory Medical Management Specialist. The incumbent will work collaboratively with the specialties that are included in Surgical Service: General Surgery, Thoracic, Vascular, ENT, Ortho, Urology, Plastics, Neurosurgery, Podiatry and Women's Health staff. The health technician will interact with patients their relatives and/or care givers. Prepares patient for exams and procedures. Ensures exam rooms are properly stocked with supplies, cleaned between patients and all equipment is in good, functioning order prior to exam. Verification of patient identification and appropriateness of procedure. Participates in time outs for various clinical procedures and minor surgeries. Aids the physician in examination and treatment of patients to ensure proper tests results are obtained. Coordinates the restocking and replacement of supplies and equipment with appropriate services. Maintains a working relationship with sterile processing, distribution and bio-med to ensure necessary supplies are available for procedures. Aids physician with wound care and applications of dressings. Patient education of wound care and signs and symptoms of infection. Aids the physician with minor surgeries including post-operative instructions, scheduling follow ups and incision care Prepares specimens and needed requisitions for submission to the laboratory or pathology section per VA policy. Aids the physician with patient recovery from treatment or procedure. Issues special instructions for post care and needed equipment or supplies to patient. Remove sutures, staples, dressings as directed by physician. Set up surgical trays using proper sterile technique. Ensures the sterile field stays intact through the procedure. Prep for urology procedures, aids the urologist with procedure, specimen collection and cleanup according to SPS and other hospital policy. Procedures including but not limited to: Cystoscopy, Biopsy, Vasectomies. Aids Urologist with clinic and clinic studies/procedures such as Urodynamics, Voiding Trials, and Cather placement/removal. Assists with Urodynamics studies. Performs Post-Voiding Residual test, voiding trials, and bladder scans. Performs the following vascular laboratory tests but not limited to: arterial systolic pressures using ultrasound Doppler and sphygmomanometer; knee/elbow and ankle/wrist systolic ratios to check the degree of claudication using the dual frequency ultrasound Doppler and sphygmomanometer Schedules patient for clinics, ensuring that the priorities for scheduling are adhered to in the National Scheduling Directive. Uses various computer applications for scheduling, reviewing charts and determining eligibility for community care including, CPRS, VistA, GUI and DST. Responsible for setup of equipment, supplies and exam/procedure rooms, also cleans room after patient use, removes and cleans instruments after use, according to SPS policy.
